Blind people are often kept out of scientific experiences, events, or careers. I have personally been told that something is too visual, or simply won’t have any meaning for me because I have been blind for my whole life. My participation in the National Federation of the Blind has helped me understand that there are ways for blind people to participate and contribute to any scientific field with the right accommodations.

As schools reopen this fall, some virtually, some in person, and some in a hybridized format, blind students may encounter new and challenging accessibility barriers. Some students already have.

The National Federation of the Blind is an organization of blind people sharing our lived experiences and pioneering strategies with one another in an effort to live the lives we want.

March was quite an interesting month for college students across the country. Most of us spent far too many hours in the library during the first week studying for midterms—perhaps the last sense of normalcy most of us had.

“Well, Bob,” said Melody, my Braille instructor. She stood up, small and frail. “We’re done!”

As the COVID-19 emergency continues to spread across the country, everyone is experiencing some level of uncertainty and disruption in daily life.
